Choosing a dildo: why size is the thing people get wrong, which materials are body-safe, and what a suction base or harness ring actually changes.
Three things decide whether a dildo works for you: the size, the material, and the base. Most people focus entirely on the first one and get it wrong.
Size: smaller than you think
The most common mistake in this shop is buying too big. Something in the five to six inch range, with a bit of flex, suits most people far better than the largest thing on the shelf. Girth matters more than length for how something actually feels, and a rigid toy at a given size feels considerably bigger than a flexible one.
If you already own something, measure it before you buy. It is the single most useful thing you can do.
Material
Silicone is the default recommendation. It is non-porous, easy to clean, warms to body temperature, and comes in every firmness from very soft to quite rigid. Use water-based lubricant with it.
Glass is firm, completely non-porous, works with every lubricant, and can be warmed or cooled in water first. Inspect for chips before each use.
Stainless steel is heavy, very firm, and holds temperature beautifully. The weight is the point, and it is not for everyone.
Avoid soft jelly materials and anything with a strong chemical smell. Porous materials cannot be properly sanitised.
The base changes what you can do with it
A suction-cup base sticks to any smooth flat surface, which opens up hands-free use, shower use, and a lot more positions. A flared base is essential if there is any chance of anal use. A harness-compatible base works with a strap-on, but check the O-ring size against the base diameter first, because a mismatch there is the most common reason a set does not work.
Realistic or not?
Entirely personal. Realistic designs suit people who want the look; abstract shapes in bright colours are often better made, easier to clean, and less confronting to leave in a drawer. Neither performs better.
Care
Wash with warm water and a toy cleaner before and after use. Let it dry completely. Store silicone away from other silicone, because some formulations react with each other over time.
