A straight, judgement-free beginner guide to anal play: why the flared base is non-negotiable, which lubricant to use, and how to start comfortably.
Most bad experiences with anal play come from three things: starting too big, not using enough lubricant, and rushing. All three are avoidable, and none of them require you to be brave about it.
The one non-negotiable rule
Only ever use a toy with a flared base. Not a slightly wider end, an actual flared base or a retrieval ring. Anything without one can be drawn in, and that ends in an emergency department. Every anal toy we stock has one.
Lubricant is not optional
Unlike the vagina, the anus does not self-lubricate. Use a thicker water-based lubricant, use more than feels necessary, and reapply. Water-based is the safe default because it works with silicone toys and with condoms.
Silicone lubricant lasts longer and some people prefer it, but never pair it with a silicone toy.
Start smaller than you think
A slim tapered plug or a finger-sized probe is the right starting point, even if it looks unambitious. The muscle needs time to relax, and that happens over sessions, not minutes. Working up gradually over weeks is normal and it is the approach that works.
Going slowly, practically
- Get relaxed first. Tension is the enemy here and nothing else will fix it.
- Apply lubricant to both the toy and yourself.
- Press gently and wait rather than pushing. Let the muscle open rather than forcing it.
- Stop if there is sharp pain. Discomfort that eases is normal; sharp pain is not.
- Remove slowly. Never pull anything out quickly.
Cleaning and hygiene
A quick shower is enough for most people. If you want to douche, use plain lukewarm water only, never soap, keep it gentle, and do not do it often. Over-douching irritates the lining and makes everything worse.
Wash toys thoroughly with a dedicated cleaner after every use and keep anal toys separate from your other toys.
A note on desensitising gels
We sell them and some people like them, but be careful. Sensation is how you know something is going wrong. A numbing product can let you push past a warning sign. Use sparingly if at all, and never as a substitute for going slowly with enough lubricant.
